What sticks

In high school our calculus class studied a couple of shapes called lemniscate and limaçon.  For some reason, those stuck with me throughout my ongoing education though I really didn’t have much application for them. (By the way, I had to google and wikipedia to recall them now.)

But why do I keep forgetting things that I use consistently though infrequently?  An example from the FTP protocol:

21 – When sending custom “QUOTE” commands to the remote server, one of the commands returned an error code that was 400 or higher (for FTP) or otherwise indicated unsuccessful completion of the command.

I’ve seen error code 21 and something like “ftp: quote command failed” over and over though my professional years.  Maybe I’ll remember it now.
